This week’s theme is STRATEGY.
Midway through my fourth decade of doing strategy work with clients, I have come to one conclusion — it gets less attention than it should most of the time. Execution feels easier, doing is more fun, the uncertainty of the long-view is unsettling. Strategy gets pushed to the side in favor of action.
And that is a mistake.
Having the courage to dream big and think through the possibilities pushes us. When we begin to see what is possible, it pulls us to do the work, it engages others in helping us, and it takes us further than we would have gone.
The following quotes follow mirror my core belief — strategy matters because it drives us to become what we are capable of becoming.
My favorite quote on strategy is …
““The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do.”
—Michael Porter
Nothing matters more personally and in business than defining the guardrails within which you will operate. Knowing what you will and will not do makes every decision easier and allows you to go further faster with less distraction.
Here are 5 more quotes on STRATEGY I love …
“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory, tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.”
—Sun Tsu
“Vision without action is a daydream. Action with without vision is a nightmare.”
—Japanese Proverb
“It’s not enough to be busy, so are the ants. The question is, what are we busy about?”
—Henry David Thoreau
“Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.”
—Jack Welch
“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak”
—Hans Hoffmann
